Minnesota Interactive Internet Mapping (MIIM)

Upgrade Information

New features added (8/13/08)

MIIM has a new look. The navigation tools were moved closer to the map and the less used GIS tools moved to the lower left corner. This gives more space for the tabbed tools and map.

Two new GIS tools were added. Buffers of any size can now be created around points, lines, and polygons. A buffer polygon can be selected and the overlay tool will display and calculate the length of roads within the buffer. This tool demonstrates what can be done with a buffer/overlay combination.

Features can now be created as private or available to the entire class.

New server (3/1/08)

MIIM was moved to a much faster server today, give it a try.

Project update (2/25/08)

We have been working on the "back-end" of MIIM for the last few weeks.  The largest change is an update to the database that allows digitized features to be stored by user name.  This will allow students within a class to have their own "space" and greatly simplifies the data storage process.

Some other changes include a new look to the background map, updates to the aerial photograph layers, and more metadata on map layers (still have a ways to go).  A new server for MIIM is currently be configured.  By early March, the speed of MIIM should be much better.

New feature added (1/28/08)

Access to census data at the tract, block group, and block level has been added. Look for "Census Boundaries" under Maps & Layers to turn on the census data.  After finding an area of interest, the query tool links to the Census Bureau website for the detailed tables.

New features added (11/26/07)

A new tool which shows the latitude and longitude of the cursor location has been added. Look for this icon in the "Tools" box.  After selecting a location, click the camera icon  near the latitude/longitude to see a bird's eye view of the location.  This opens another window connected to Microsoft Virtual Earth.  For the adventurous, select 3D to see buildings in three dimensions - try downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul. (3D requires the installation of a small browser plug in).

A new search layer has been added that allows you to search for a landmark when you know the name, but not where it is located.  The "USGS Place Names" contains locations for many parks, schools, and other landmarks throughout the Twin Cities area.  Select the "Search" box and enter the first part of the name of the landmark to make your search.

Spatial Thinking Exercises - We have also developed several approaches to get students to think spatially using little or no technology. The focus is to help students learn to increase their spatial thinking skills.  more

Known bugs

  • When using the Internet Explorer browser, you will not be able to edit digitized features or attributes.  You can save and delete features.  Not an issue using Firefox.  Working to find a solution to this bug.
  • Select functions (by polygon, point or extent) do not work after loading a saved workspace.  This is a known issue with the software, waiting for correction in new release.
  • When querying the map, a blank results window may appear.  The blank window can be closed. This is a known issue with the software, waiting for correction in new release.
